David wins cliffhanger @ World C'ships

MSTT playaer & coach and recently crowned 2014 Vic. Player of the Year, David Powell (WR 267) played one of the best matches of his career by defeating Czech Republic's Tomas Tregler (WR158) in the last match of the pre-qualifying rounds. In what was a strange match where both players dominated in big blocks at various stages David scapped through 11-9 in the 7th set.

David came out firing and won the first 2 sets comfortably. The 3rd set was a ripping contest with many great rallies and David came up trumps winning 13-11 to take a 3-0 lead. This would have been a crushing blow to the Czech but he came out blitzing in the next 3 sets leading 7-0 then next set 8-0 then in the 6th set 6-0. David had no comeback and lost the 3 sets 2,2,5 in what looked like a grim situation even though the match was level at 3 sets all. David has proved over the years he can bounce back quickly from negative experiences and in this instance had to do it within just a few minutes. In an intense and topsy turvy last set, David lead 6-4 then Tomas won next 4 points to lead 8-6 which triggered a time out by David. David won the next 2 points while returning serve then split one point each on his serve before winning the last 2 points while returning serve again. At 9-9 there was another great rally where David was lucky to hit the net and win point then won the last point and threw his arms out in delight.

David now progresses to 1st Round of main draw where he is due to play Hung-Chieh Chiang from Chinese Taipei who is WR70. The other Aussie to make it into main draw is Jian Fang Lay gained automatic spot in main draw. She is due to play Isabelle Siyun Li (WR110) from Singapore.
